Cardiology
Cardiologists treat diseases of the heart. Vascular problems can include problems with the veins and arteries both in the heart and in the rest of the body. Heart disease can be caused by problems with movement of the blood through the heart, such as with clogged arteries, or with the physical structure of the heart and heart valves. Heart disease can also be due to problems with the heart’s electrical system, causing abnormalities in how the heart beats.
Cardiologists can diagnose and treat these problems through medication, lifestyle management or procedures. In certain cases, they may send the patient on to a cardiovascular surgeon.
Some conditions cardiologists treat include, but are not limited to:
- Heart failure
- Heart murmur
- Atherosclerosis
